The registers overstate the field: fifty-two entities file under the wafer-fabrication code and nine operate fabs; ninety-two file under assembly and test against seven or eight real operators.
Nine wafer fabs anchor Singapore's semiconductor sector, all run by multinational subsidiaries or joint ventures — GlobalFoundries, Micron, UMC, SSMC, STMicroelectronics and others. JTC's wafer fab parks host 14 global semiconductor firms. Each fab is a 300 mm plant and a capital project running into billions of dollars, so the front end has no long tail: 52 entities register under the wafer-fabrication activity code (SSIC 26112), but only nine operate fabs.
Depth sits behind the fabs, not inside them. The SME layer is the supply chain that keeps the plants running — parts cleaning and process-kit refurbishment, sub-assemblies and modules for equipment makers, and ultra-high-purity gas and chemical delivery. The contractor and hook-up cluster, several firms in Ang Mo Kio Industrial Park 2, competes on orbital-welding qualification and weld-coupon records, tracing back to the first wave of fabs.
Assembly and test (OSAT) is the second multinational layer: seven to eight verified operators — UTAC, STATS ChipPAC, ASE, Silicon Box — against 92 entities in the assembly-and-test code (SSIC 26113). Printed-circuit-board assembly and electronics manufacturing services, plus semiconductor test and failure analysis, complete the sector. The work runs from cleanrooms at STMicroelectronics in Ang Mo Kio to precision-welding shops nearby.
Cleanroom construction designs, builds and certifies controlled environments for semiconductor, electronics and related manufacturing — wall and ceiling systems, HEPA/ULPA filtration, HVAC and monitoring — to a specified ISO 14644 class. Buyers assess achievable class, turnkey scope, certification and validation records.
Electronics manufacturing services provide contract manufacturing of complete electronic products — from PCB assembly through box build, cable and wire harness assembly, system integration, test and fulfilment. Buyers assess capacity, supply-chain management, quality certification and the ability to handle full product transfer.
PCB assembly populates bare printed circuit boards with components by surface-mount and through-hole processes — solder paste printing, pick-and-place, reflow, wave soldering and inspection. Scope may include bare-board fabrication. Buyers assess IPC class, board complexity, volume band and test coverage.
Semiconductor assembly and test packages fabricated dies into finished devices — die attach, wire bonding or flip-chip, encapsulation and lead finishing — then verifies function through wafer probe and final test. Buyers evaluate package types, test coverage, throughput and quality certification.
Semiconductor equipment and components covers precision parts, modules and sub-assemblies built to tool-maker specifications — machined and cleaned metal parts, gas and fluid delivery systems, frames and electromechanical modules — for fab and assembly equipment. Buyers assess cleanliness class, material certification, tolerance and traceability.
Wafer fabrication turns silicon wafers into integrated circuits through photolithography, deposition, etching, ion implantation and planarisation, run in a cleanroom. Output is measured by process node, wafer diameter (200mm/300mm) and yield. Buyers assess node range, capacity, quality certification and supply security.
Companies shaping the sector
SP Manufacturing is a privately held, Singapore-headquartered electronics manufacturing services (EMS) provider building wire harnesses, box builds and printed circuit board assemblies for mission-critical aerospace, automotive, medical, industrial and semiconductor customers. It runs plants and offices in seven countries — Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, China, Germany, Poland and the US — and holds ISO 13485, IATF 16949 and AS9100D.
