Ship husbandry is the in-water maintenance of vessels without drydocking — the diving and robotic services that keep a hull efficient and a vessel in class between yard visits: in-water hull cleaning, propeller polishing, underwater inspection in lieu of drydocking (UWILD), anode replacement, rope-guard and stern-tube-seal work, and class-approved underwater welding and shell-plate repair. In the world's busiest transhipment and bunkering port, with more than 130,000 vessel calls a year, this is high-volume, recurring work performed at Singapore's anchorages. The regulator is tightening it: the MPA selected six partners for in-water hull inspection-and-cleaning trials backed by close to S$3.7 million of MINT co-funding — a call that drew 19 proposals from 36 companies across nine countries — signalling a decisive policy shift toward robotic/ROV hull cleaning that captures biofouling rather than releasing it. The buyer reads an underwater-services firm on class acceptance (whether ABS/DNV/LR/BV/ClassNK accept its UWILD surveys), diver certification (IMCA, CDAS, SS 511 compliance), environmental permitting (port-authority-approved capture cleaning), and 24/7 response.

The field is a dense homegrown one, complemented by two structural entrants. The commercial-diving specialists — Master-Tech (400–500 dives a year, IMCA-certified), Synergy Marine, IMID, Commercial Diving Services, Nereus Subsea and the diving arms of Kim Heng (Zale Offshore) and Mencast — self-perform hull cleaning, UWILD, propeller polishing and underwater repair across the port. Overlaid on them is a US-built consolidator, Subsea Global Solutions, which assembled a Singapore platform (30+ diver-technicians, seven dive support vessels) by acquiring Underwater Contractors Singapore and T&T Salvage Asia's diving division, offering class-approved shell-plate repairs and biofouling-compliant cleaning. And the emerging robotic tier — ECOsubsea's capture-filtering ROV fleet in the Port of Singapore and AUV/robotics players — is where the MPA's funding is pushing the market. Several diving firms also carry subsea and salvage slugs — one record, multiple slugs.
