Capability

Structural steel fabrication in Singapore

Fabrication and erection of structural steel frames, trusses and members for buildings, bridges and industrial plants. Work covers cutting, welding, drilling and surface protection to structural drawings, then site erection. Buyers assess welding certification, coating systems and capacity against project tonnage and steel grade.

A buyer commissioning structural steelwork in Singapore reads a fabricator on five things, in order: fabrication-yard capacity (tonnes per year, and whether the yard is in Singapore, Johor or both); BCA standing — registration as a licensed Specialist Builder (Structural Steelwork) alongside the General Building grade, the credential that gates public-sector and large-private work; welding and fabrication accreditation — coded welders, in-house NDT, and increasingly SS EN 1090 execution-class certification administered through the Singapore Structural Steel Society (SSSS); erection and heavy-lift capability on site, not just shop fabrication; and a track record on the reference jobs that prove tonnage and tolerance — stadia, airport terminals, and heavy industrial/petrochemical plant. The word "fabricator" spans a wide range, from 5,000-tonne-a-year specialist shops to regional multi-disciplinary contractors that design, detail, fabricate and erect; the credible ones publish a real accreditation, a real yard and named landmark projects rather than a stock-photo gallery.

The shape of the field is a short head and a long tail. At the top sit two SGX-listed names — Yongnam Holdings and TTJ Holdings — that combine large fabrication yards with in-house erection and regional reach, and Yongnam is additionally the region's dominant supplier of reusable steel struts for deep excavations (ERSS), a distinct sub-market from building steel. Below them are established privately-held fabricators (Kim Seng Heng, Steelmech, Sin Hong Seng, Anderco, Hoe Hoe, Zhang Steel) and a cluster of strutting / temporary-works specialists (Kian Hock, Kori, Antara Koh) whose steel goes underground rather than up. Landmark reference projects recur across the sector's marketing — the Changi Airport terminals and Jewel Changi, the Singapore Sports Hub / National Stadium, and Marina Bay Sands. Two structural shifts matter: BCA's DfMA agenda actively pushes structural steel as a productivity-raising offsite method, expanding demand; and at the architectural top end mass-engineered timber (MET) now competes with steel for mid-rise and feature roofs, a substitution buyers increasingly weigh.
