Indoor farming in Singapore

Growing crops in enclosed, climate-controlled environments using vertical racks, hydroponics or aquaponics under LED lighting. Systems regulate temperature, humidity, CO2 and nutrients year-round. Buyers select on crop range, yield consistency, food-safety certification and delivery proximity.

Commercial indoor farming is controlled-environment agriculture (CEA) that grows leafy vegetables, herbs and specialty crops inside buildings, on rooftops, or in multi-storey towers using hydroponic, aeroponic and LED-lit systems rather than open field or soil. It is the technology-heavy edge of Singapore's "30 by 30" target — producing 30% of the nation's nutritional needs locally by 2030 — and drew close to S$40 million in SFA "30x30 Express" grants in 2020. A buyer evaluating one of these companies works through a fixed stack: does it hold an SFA farm licence; what is its production capacity (tonnes/year or grow-area in sqm); its crop range (kailan, lettuce, kale, basil, microgreens, strawberries); its technology (hydroponic vs aeroponic, automation and LED control); and its offtake — is the produce actually on supermarket shelves (FairPrice, Sheng Siong) or supplied to F&B, versus still pre-revenue. The distinction that matters most for the Index is operator vs system-builder: some of these firms grow and sell vegetables, others design and sell the turnkey farms.

The shape of the sector is a small cluster of scaled operators, a layer of turnkey CEA technology builders, and a visible trail of failures — this is a field that has been hard on capital. At the top by capacity sit Greenphyto (a 23m, five-storey Jurong West facility rated to ~2,000 tonnes/yr, S$80M, produce in ~95 supermarkets) and Dutch-backed Growy (~500 tonnes/yr across 8,000 sqm at Changi). Pioneers Sky Greens (the world's first low-carbon hydraulic vertical farm) and Sustenir Agriculture remain names of record but have both contracted sharply — Sky Greens had many greenhouses torn down by 2024, and Sustenir went through financial restructuring and layoffs. The technology/turnkey layer — Archisen (Just Produce brand), Netatech, Aerospring — sells farm systems as much as vegetables. Be honest about the closures: I.F.F.I (Indoor Farm Factory Innovation) collapsed (parent TranZPlus liquidated Nov 2023, facility vacated April 2024 despite ≥S$2.9M in grants), and the VertiVegies / &ever venture wound down. Structurally, the survivors are consolidating around automation, LED-energy efficiency and guaranteed retail offtake; capacity on paper still runs well ahead of profitable output.
