Fire protection systems in Singapore

Design, supply and installation of active fire protection — sprinklers, hydrants, hosereels, fire alarms, gas suppression and smoke control — certified under SCDF regulations. Buyers assess registered fire protection contractor status, Qualified Person endorsement and commissioning records against building occupancy and hazard class.

Fire protection is the most tightly regulated capability in Singapore's built-environment stack, governed on two fronts at once. SCDF's Fire Safety & Shelter Department (FSSD) approves every fire-protection plan submission and licenses the registered fire-protection contractors who install and certify the work, while the BCA Contractors Registry grades the same firms under the mechanical-and-electrical workhead ME06 (Fire Prevention & Protection Systems), from L1 up to the unlimited-tender L6. A serious buyer reads a fire-protection firm on four axes: its SCDF registration standing (and whether it can act as the licensed contractor of record for FSSD certification); its BCA grade (which caps the public-project value it can tender); its system range — whether it covers wet systems (sprinkler, wet/dry riser, hydrant/hose, fire-pump sets), detection and alarm, and gas/foam/water-mist suppression under one roof; and its project scale, since a data-centre or hospital job demands depth a shophouse retrofit does not.

The field is a barbell. At one end sit the multinational fire majors — Johnson Controls, which absorbed Tyco and carries the ANSUL, Grinnell and Tyco Fire brands across sprinkler, gaseous suppression, water mist and detection; Chubb Fire & Security; and Bosch, a detection-and-alarm specialist. At the other end is a deep bench of long-established local SCDF-registered specialists — Deluge, Active Fire, Sprinkler Fire Systems, Hart, Fire-Guard, Tong Loong, Mechfire and others — several operating for four to five decades and holding higher BCA grades. Two structural shifts reshape demand: data-centre suppression, where clean-agent and water-mist systems for mission-critical white space are a distinct high-margin niche (Active Fire's whole positioning), and mass-timber and performance-based fire engineering under the Fire Code 2023. Firetronics anchors the detection layer as the sole Singapore distributor for Japan's Nohmi Bosai.
