Data centre power systems in Singapore

The electrical systems that keep a data hall powered without interruption: medium-voltage distribution, transformers, switchgear, uninterruptible power supply (UPS), standby generators and busway. Delivered as design, supply, installation and commissioning. Buyers select on redundancy topology, Uptime Institute Tier rating and the testing record.

Singapore is the most power-constrained data-centre market in Asia, and that scarcity is exactly what makes critical-power engineering the highest-stakes discipline in the sector. The government froze new data-centre capacity in 2019, reopened the pipeline in 2022 through a pilot that allocated roughly 80 MW across a handful of operators, then formalised growth with the Green Data Centre Roadmap (2024), which earmarked at least 300 MW of additional capacity — and more again for operators bringing their own green energy. Every megawatt of that award lands as a construction problem: an HV intake and substation stepping down from the grid, LV switchgear distributing to the white space, UPS riding through the seconds before generators start, standby diesel generation sized for full IT load, and busway carrying power the last metres to the racks. The work is gated by two regulatory locks a buyer cannot avoid — a BCA ME05 electrical workhead (Grade L6 for the largest jobs) to hold the contract, and an EMA Licensed Electrical Worker (LEW) to design, certify and energise any installation above the approved-load threshold, with HV-licensed engineers required for the substation itself.

The buyer's decision stack turns on redundancy topology before anything else: N (no spare), N+1 (one redundant module per string), or 2N (fully mirrored A/B paths) — the last being the Tier III/IV default that dictates duplicate switchgear, dual UPS trains and separate genset banks, roughly doubling the electrical bill of materials. Around that spine sit the specialist trades: UPS integrators competing on topology (decentralised parallel architecture and hot-swap modular systems now reach 500 kVA per unit at 96%+ online efficiency), genset packagers assembling and load-bank-testing units from 45 to 3,000 kVA against SS 535, busway houses supplying and testing distribution from LV up to 128 kV, and DCIM integrators instrumenting every branch circuit for the PUE reporting Singapore's green-DC standard now expects. Most of the strongest players are the same L6 electrical contractors that build the base building — one record, multiple slugs — with the net-new depth concentrated in UPS, gensets, busway and power monitoring.
