PROJECT SPOTLIGHT · COMMERCIAL & INDUSTRIAL SOLAR
The roof that became a power station
Kuehne + Nagel wanted its Singapore logistics hub to run cleaner. Cleantech Solar's answer put 844.8 kilowatts-peak on the roof, sells the electricity by the kilowatt-hour — and cost the logistics giant nothing up front.
Singapore has no hinterland to fill with solar farms; if the island is going to generate clean power at scale, it will do it on rooftops. Which makes every large industrial roof a small piece of national infrastructure waiting to happen — and the logistics sector, with its hectares of flat warehouse crown, the obvious place to start.
Kuehne + Nagel's hub at Pioneer Crescent was built for this moment: a logistics facility designed to high environmental standards and, unusually for its generation, designed solar-ready from the outset. Cleantech Solar — the Singapore-headquartered developer that finances, builds, owns and operates commercial and industrial solar across Asia — completed the picture with an 844.8 kilowatt-peak array across the roof. The system generates on the order of a million kilowatt-hours a year, and over its life is expected to keep roughly 13,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere.
The commercial structure is the part most companies underestimate. Kuehne + Nagel did not buy panels; it signed a twenty-year solar-as-a-service partnership. Cleantech Solar carries the capital cost, the construction, the ownership and the operation — the client simply buys the electricity the roof produces. It is the model that has unlocked corporate solar across Asia, because it converts a capital project into an operating line, and it moves the performance risk to the party best equipped to manage it: the one that builds rooftop plants for a living. The project was delivered as one of the fastest implementations of its size in Singapore at the time — a point the client's team credits partly to how the developer worked with its health and safety organisation, which on a live logistics site is the constraint that matters.
In the film, Kuehne + Nagel's people say on camera what the numbers say on paper: the roof works. That is the point of a Project Spotlight — not the vendor's claim, but the client's verdict, delivered from under the array itself.
