Biomedical & Medtech Manufacturing

Leading pharmaceutical companies in Singapore

Eight of the world's ten largest drugmakers manufacture in Singapore, most of them concentrated at Tuas Biomedical Park: GSK's vaccines and biologics complex, Sanofi's modular vaccine plant, biologics campuses run by Amgen, Novartis, Roche and Lonza, and small-molecule API plants for Pfizer, MSD and AbbVie. The next wave is already building — WuXi Biologics' roughly US$1.4 billion integrated campus and WuXi XDC's antibody-drug-conjugate facility among them — alongside homegrown manufacturers such as Beacons Pharmaceuticals, described as Singapore's largest generic-pharmaceutical maker. The pharmaceutical companies in Singapore below are an unranked set from the Singapore Industry Index's record.

The companies

  1. AbbVie Operations Singapore

Operates a contained small-molecule API facility (around 120,000 sq m) at Tuas Biomedical Park producing APIs for its immunology and oncology pipelines, alongside bulk biologics drug-substance manufacturing on the same campus, with a further US$223 million committed to expand biologics capacity.

  2. Actris (Advanced Cell Therapy and Research Institute, Singapore)

A roughly 2,000 m2 GMP cell-therapy facility on the Singapore General Hospital campus with 14 clean suites, 4 translational labs and a QC lab, enabling hospitals, research institutions and biotech startups to carry out cell selection, genetic modification and manufacture of cell therapies locally — a national shared-GMP facility.

  3. Amgen Singapore Manufacturing

Amgen's first Asian manufacturing site at Tuas Biomedical Park, anchored by a next-generation biologics (monoclonal antibody) drug-substance plant integrating multiple process technologies into one facility at a fraction of the footprint, capital and operating cost of a conventional plant, with a chemical-synthesis (small-molecule API) facility alongside it; the site employs 350-plus staff.

  4. Beacons Pharmaceuticals

A homegrown manufacturer described as Singapore's largest generic-pharmaceutical maker, producing 200-plus therapeutics across multiple finished dosage forms from two PIC/S-GMP plants, with fully integrated contract manufacturing.

  5. Esco Aster

A homegrown Singapore CDMO at Ayer Rajah Crescent offering biologics, viral-vector production, cell-therapy manufacturing on its proprietary Tide Motion bioreactor platform, plasmid-DNA manufacturing and small-batch aseptic fill-finish — positioned as Southeast Asia's first small-batch aseptic fill-and-finish service — with an A*STAR bioprocessing partnership.

  6. GSK (Singapore)

Operates Singapore's largest vaccines and biologics manufacturing complex at Tuas, and small-molecule chemical and API manufacturing at Jurong and Tuas — historically ten-plus APIs, a Jurong facility deploying continuous and digital manufacturing, and a first-in-Singapore high-potency oncology plant. The Tuas site pairs biologic and vaccine production with small-molecule API.

  7. Hilleman Laboratories

A roughly US$20 million, ~30,000 sq ft multi-modality vaccine-and-biologics development-and-manufacturing facility at Depot Road (the ACES facility) with end-to-end drug-substance, drug-product and clinical-material capability in isolated single-use suites, focused on mRNA and viral-vector platforms through Phase II; billed as Singapore's only multi-modality vaccine-and-biologics development-and-manufacturing organisation.

  8. ICM Pharma

A Singapore finished-dose manufacturer producing 300-plus products across tablets, capsules, liquids, creams and injectables at a cGMP facility, with contract and OEM manufacturing via its PharmaKoe arm.

  9. Lonza Biologics Tuas

A large mammalian cell-culture CDMO campus at Tuas producing monoclonal antibodies and recombinant and fusion proteins across 20,000-litre stainless-steel and 2,000-litre single-use suites, with cell-line construction through commercial process validation, purification, viral clearance and fill, plus an allogeneic cell-therapy centre of excellence and a strong regulatory-inspection record.

  10. MSD (Merck & Co)

A 72-acre multi-product Tuas hub whose chemical plant has historically produced small-molecule APIs (including etoricoxib and simvastatin), with a US$500 million programme adding sterile fill-finish and secondary packaging for biologic products — KEYTRUDA (pembrolizumab) vials and GARDASIL 9 syringes. Singapore headcount exceeds 1,800.

  11. Novartis Singapore

Operates a biologics drug-substance facility at Tuas built with an investment of over US$500 million — its first biomanufacturing plant in Asia, using cell-culture production — alongside a separate solid-dosage (tablet) small-molecule plant through Novartis Singapore Pharmaceutical Manufacturing (NSPM).

  12. Pfizer (Singapore)

Runs a small-molecule API plant at Tuas Biomedical Park spanning about 22 acres with close to 400 staff, historically producing APIs including gabapentin and pregabalin; a roughly US$743 million extension of the Tuas API plant, and a Jurong Island Manufacturing Technology & Development Centre supporting global process development.

  13. Roche Singapore Technical Operations

Commercial biologics drug-substance manufacturing at Tuas Biomedical Park, originally established as the Genentech Singapore biologics plant for large-scale mammalian cell-culture production; an anchor Tuas tenant.

  14. Sanofi (Evolutive Vaccine Facility)

A roughly US$590-638 million modular, digitally-enabled vaccine-and-biologics plant at Tuas designed to switch rapidly between up to four vaccines across protein and mRNA platforms — Sanofi's first fully modular vaccine and biologics site in Asia, engineered for pandemic and regional demand, with captive multi-vaccine drug-product filling built in.

  15. Takeda Manufacturing Singapore

Operates a biologic drug-substance plant at Woodlands Industrial Park (distinct from the Tuas cluster), notable for its zero-energy building programme.

  16. Thermo Fisher Scientific (Patheon Pharma Services)

Runs a roughly 24,000 m2 sterile fill-finish CDMO site at 31 Joo Koon Circle (with reserved expansion of a further ~14,000 m2), offering a high-speed, fully automated aseptic liquid-vial filling line with single-use formulation up to 1,000 litres for both small- and large-molecule products, and reserved future capacity for lyophilised vials, prefilled syringes and cartridges.

  17. WuXi Biologics (Singapore)

Building a roughly US$1.4 billion integrated CRDMO on a 13.5-hectare Tuas site adding 120,000 litres of biologics capacity and about 1,500 jobs, offering end-to-end drug-substance and drug-product (fill-finish) services across monoclonal antibodies, bispecifics and recombinant proteins on single-use technology.

  18. WuXi XDC

Building a ~22,000 m2 Tuas facility for ADC and bioconjugate drug substance up to 2,000 litres plus drug-product lyophilisation engineered for over 8 million vials a year, with onsite MSAT and QC.
