Metal fabrication in Singapore: sheet, structural and laser

Laser-cut sheet metal to ±0.1 mm; structural steel for a S$50.5 billion construction market in 2025. Who fabricates what in Singapore, and who buys it.

Metal fabrication in Singapore is two trades — sheet-metal shops running fibre-laser cutting, CNC punching and press-brake bending to ±0.1 mm, and structural-steel fabricators feeding a construction market that awarded S$50.5 billion in 2025. Both sit inside a precision-engineering cluster of more than 3,000 firms.

Two trades share one word

Singapore’s construction industry awarded S$50.5 billion of contracts in 2025, and its electronics cluster grew 12.7% the same year — and both of those numbers are demand curves for metal fabrication, just for different halves of it. “Metal fabrication” in Singapore means two distinct trades. Sheet-metal fabrication cuts, punches, bends and welds flat stock into enclosures, chassis, brackets and frames for the island’s equipment makers. Structural-steel fabrication cuts, welds and erects beams, trusses and columns for its builders. The machines, accreditations, customers and economics barely overlap, and a buyer who conflates them will shortlist the wrong companies.

What the two halves share is position: both sit in the supplier layer beneath Singapore’s marquee industries, part of the precision-engineering base of more than 3,000 firms that grew about 3.6% in 2025 — steady work, lagging the chip boom it feeds.

The sheet-metal shop floor: laser, punch, brake, weld

The front end of a credible Singapore sheet-metal shop is cutting — CNC fibre lasers from the TRUMPF, Bystronic and Amada stables, alongside CNC turret punching — followed by press-brake bending, where repeatable angles decide whether parts assemble. Forming feeds MIG, TIG, spot and increasingly robotic welding, self-clinch fastener insertion and finishing: deburring, powder coating, plating, silkscreen. The materials baseline is mild steel, stainless and aluminium, typically 0.5–16 mm thick, with precision shops quoting ±0.1 mm and common bed sizes of 1,500 by 3,000 mm.

Serious buyers screen on three things beyond the machine list: in-house inspection (a CMM, not a tape measure), certification (ISO 9001 as the floor, ISO 13485 or AS9100 signalling medical and aerospace clearance) and cluster logic — the shops concentrate in Tuas, Jurong, Kian Teck, Ang Mo Kio, Defu Lane and Changi North, close to the customers they serve. The work itself is a map of Singapore industry: semiconductor tool frames, 19-inch server and data-centre racks, electronics enclosures, medical and laboratory housings, automation machinery, marine and oil-and-gas components.

Structural steel: tonnage, accreditation and the BCA gate

Structural steel is judged on different axes: fabrication-yard capacity in tonnes per year, licensing as a BCA Specialist Builder in structural steelwork — the credential that gates public-sector and major private jobs — and welding pedigree, meaning coded welders, in-house non-destructive testing and, increasingly, SS EN 1090 execution-class certification administered through the Singapore Structural Steel Society’s accreditation scheme.

The field is a short head and a long tail. Two SGX-listed names, Yongnam Holdings and TTJ Holdings, combine large yards with in-house erection; beneath them sit established private fabricators, and a distinct sub-market of strutting specialists whose steel goes underground into deep excavations rather than up into frames. The reference projects recur across the sector — Changi’s terminals, Jewel, the National Stadium, Marina Bay Sands — because in this trade a named landmark is the proof of tonnage and tolerance that no brochure can fake.

Demand: chips on one side, cranes on the other

The two order books move on different cycles, which is the sector’s quiet strength. On the electronics side, the 2025–26 semiconductor surge pulls sheet metal directly: every wafer tool needs a frame, every data centre needs racks, every fab fit-out needs enclosures. On the construction side, BCA forecasts 2026 demand of S$47–53 billion, level with 2025’s S$50.5 billion, with output projected to rise about 7% to S$43–46 billion as Changi Terminal 5, the Marina Bay Sands expansion and major rail works move into construction. BCA’s design-for-manufacturing agenda actively favours structural steel as an offsite, productivity-raising method — a policy tailwind the trade has not historically enjoyed.

The caveat: no league table, and capacity that crosses the Causeway

Honesty requires two admissions. First, there is no official census of Singapore’s metal fabricators — the trade spans listed groups to ten-man shops, and any count is an estimate. Second, published “Singapore” capacity is often split across the border: several structural fabricators run yards in Johor as well as Singapore, and buyers who need Singapore-fabricated steel for programme or compliance reasons must ask the question directly. At the architectural top end, mass-engineered timber now competes with steel for mid-rise frames and feature roofs — a substitution that did not exist a decade ago.

On the record

Three companies on the Singapore Industry Index record mark out the trade’s range. Steelmech, a BCA-certified structural-steelwork specialist with a stated capacity of 5,000 tonnes a year, fabricated the 480-tonne steel canopy of the Singapore Oceanarium at Resorts World Sentosa. FMB Trading and Engineering, a 60-plus-staff sheet-metal shop, runs laser cutting, bending and finishing for high-mix, low-volume work and prototyping. U-Fab shows where fabrication shades into precision machining — a 60-plus machine fleet spanning CNC, EDM and one of Singapore’s largest dedicated grinding capacities, holding ±0.005 mm. Between them: the frame of a building, the skin of a machine, and the tolerance of a tool.
